antsdawnsmallContesting is the competitive side of amateur radio, and involves trying to contact as many stations as possible in a set period. Contests last anywhere between 2 and 48 hours, and can have specific rules – e.g. working as many stations in Commonwealth countries as possible.

Contesting is not everybody’s cup of tea, but I really enjoy it, partly due to its competive nature, because it makes you improve your station, and because contesting is often involves working as part of a team. Also, as someone who is busy and doesn’t have a great deal of spare time, it means that I can work lots of stations in a short burst of radio activity.

My favorite contest is BERU, my least favourite AFS SSB!
